Hello, I am having a difficult time getting the Midi plugin to work with Reaper using Mackie. Is there a setup guide or some instructions that I can follow?
Unfortunately, there is no specific setup guide for Reaper. What problems are you experiencing?
First, I did not understand that the macos IAC Driver had to be renamed to blank in order for this to work. I hope it does not affect other applications. Second, I do not understand the role of the global settings item. Do I have to consume a button just to have it exist so that I can set the Mackie control device? Third, I get a “selected channel unknown” message when using the db value function from Reaper and exceeding 0db. Do I need to adjust a setting? Thanks for your help
You don’t have to do that. You can name MIDI ports and the driver as you like; you just need to select the corresponding port name in the plugin and in Reaper.
No. There is no difference between setting the Mackie ports using the Mackie button and using the Global Settings button. That said, there is a bug in the current version that sometimes prevents setting the ports using a Mackie button. If that happens (the port reverts to its previous state), you need to temporarily assign the Global Settings action to a button. Once the configuration is complete, you can remove it from the button.
If you assign a “Selected Channel” function to a button or dial, the plugin must know which channel (of the 8 channels assigned to the Mackie device) is selected in Reaper. If Stream Deck is started after Reaper, or when the very first button is configured and no channel change has been made in Reaper, the plugin does not know which channel is selected, hence the message.
You will also see this message if the channel in Reaper is not one of the 8 assigned to the Mackie device. All channels outside these 8 are unknown to the plugin, so if one of them is selected, it’s unknown to the plugin.
What you need to do is select a channel (among the 8) in Reaper, and you’ll be fine. If the “right” channel is already selected, you need to select another channel and then select it again, just to have Reaper tell the plugin which channel is selected.
Gunnar, thank you for the responses.
- When the IAC Driver is left to its own name, the options in the plugin preface the Mackie2Daw and Daw2Mackie with “IAC Driver” and the plugin will not select them.
- I was seeing the bug you mentioned in setting the ports, so I used the global setting. I will remove it from the button now.
- As for the “selected channel unknown”, I have a selected channel, and the plugin recognizes it and changes values from zero db and below without issue. However, if I go above zero db, I get the message. Returning below zero db eliminates the message.
